The 12-storey Vancouver City Hall in British Columbia is home to Vancouver City Council. Its art deco style is bold, and the building is a landmark.
Challenge
City Hall decided to improve its facilities by replacing an aged chiller and cooling tower system with an air source heat pump. The goal was to reduce carbon emissions by 33%. Longer term City Hall aims to derive 100% of its energy from renewable sources and to achieve zero emissions in all its own facilities by 2040.
Solution
Aermec’s multi-function heat pumps were selected as a winning energy efficient solution. The NRP allows simultaneous production of chilled water and hot water in a versatile and efficient way.
The City Hall initially installed Aermec’s NRP air source heat recovery unit to get the initiative underway.
The heat pump initiative showcased the city’s commitment to installing more energy efficient solutions. It was calculated that the heat pump would make a significant contribution by reducing greenhouse gases by as much as 34% annually with a projected cost saving of $20,000 per annum.
Result
The initiative has gained traction in other sectors with the private sector investing in more greener operations and upgrading equipment to improve the performance of their buildings, reduce carbon emissions and save on energy costs.
